Why Running is So Important for HYROX
Running is the common thread in every HYROX race. Read why endurance carries so much weight and how to learn to run under fatigue.

In short: Running makes up the majority of a HYROX race: eight rounds of 1 kilometre, totalling 8 kilometres. Research into the sport shows that endurance is strongly correlated with finish time, and that running under the fatigue from the stations — "compromised running" — is one of the biggest challenges of the format.
It is important to read these findings with appropriate caution: this is one small-scale study, not large-scale repeated research. The results provide a first indication that a good aerobic base carries significant weight in the final outcome, but do not imply that strength is irrelevant — the stations themselves certainly demand strength and strength endurance.
- Easy runs to build the aerobic base and general endurance.
- Tempo and interval training to teach you to run at a pace you can repeat eight times, rather than starting too fast and slowing down.
- Brick workouts, where you combine a kilometre of running directly with a station or strength exercise — for example, a kilometre run followed by wall balls or a sled exercise — so your body gets used to running under fatigue.
In total 8 kilometres, divided into eight rounds of 1 kilometre, each followed by a workout station.
Is running more important than strength in HYROX?
Initial research suggests that endurance is strongly correlated with finish time, but the eight stations certainly demand strength and strength endurance. Both are necessary; running accounts for a significant portion of the time, but without a strength base, you will lose time at the stations.
What is "compromised running"?
The term for running performed while your body is already fatigued from a preceding strength effort, such as a station in HYROX. It is one of the reasons why HYROX running feels different from a standalone running race.
How do I train specifically for running during HYROX?
Combine easy runs for your aerobic base with tempo or interval training for your pacing, and add brick workouts where you directly alternate running with a station or strength exercise.
Do I need to be a fast runner to perform well in HYROX?
It helps, but it's not decisive. Endurance carries significant weight, but running technique under fatigue, pacing, and the strength to perform the stations well play at least as great a role in your total finish time.
In what order should I best combine strength and running in the same workout?
Research suggests an advantage for lower-body strength when strength training is performed before endurance training, with no clear disadvantage for other training goals. This is a useful guideline, not an absolute rule.
